HOLISTIC PELVIC CARE
a revolutionary approach to female wellness
Unfortunately, the Oregon Medical Board has claimed that acupuncturists aren't qualified to offer internal pelvic floor therapy to their patients anymore.
This recent decision was based on a poor understanding of the extensive education that all acupuncturists undergo in graduate school programs. Despite having as much or more hands-on training than massage therapists, together with a more in-depth understanding of physiology and human health, acupuncturists are being required to obtain an additional LMT license in order to offer pelvic floor therapy to their patients. Because Oregon's state association of acupuncturists (Oregon Association of Acupuncturists) has limited funding to pay our hardworking lobbyists, and limited volunteer support to advocate for keeping this much-needed modality within our scope of practice, it is unlikely this rash decision will be overturned any time soon. As such, I am sadly unable to offer Holistic Pelvic Care to patients at this time.
The pelvic floor is a central but often-overlooked area of the body.
Prolonged sitting, hormonal birth control and IUDs, injuries, infections, surgeries, childbirth, medications, and trauma - whether sexual or not, can all have a negative impact on the health of our pelvic space. Pelvic disorders and pain are common experiences that many women learn to endure, not knowing there are natural options to relieve their symptoms.
While kegels are often touted as way to help tone the pelvic floor, many pelvic symptoms arise out excess tension in the fascia (connective tissue). Addressing this with manual therapy is often necessary for strengthening to be effective.
Holistic Pelvic Care™ is a unique approach to pelvic floor therapy pioneered by Portland's own Tami Kent, author of Wild Feminine, Mothering from Your Center, and Wild Creative. After years of offering pelvic floor work from a conventional physical therapy approach, Tami discovered that women gained more optimal results when they played an active role in their own healing as opposed to simply having a medical procedure done to them.
HPC combines gentle intravaginal massage, trigger-point therapy and myofascial release with guided visualization and breathwork to affect physiological and energetic changes in the pelvic bowl.
"The primary goal of HPC is to empower a woman to inhabit her pelvic space and occupy her feminine ground physically, energetically, emotionally & spiritually"
- Tami Kent, MSPT
